1. Colour Theory

Choose a colour palette that is romantic and cozy for the cooler autumn weather — think deep tones such as a rich plum or a soft mauve. Your accent colours should include a metallic that complements your principal colour, which will elevate your overall design.

2. Textures

Consider the textures you want to incorporate — what ambiance do you want to create for your guests? Velvet is sultry and luxurious, which pairs beautifully with a structured oak and brushed gold accents.

3. Floral Design

Although your favourite flowers might be peonies, consider florals that are both in season, and local. Fillers will help you stretch your floral budget by providing more substance and volume to your arrangements, and will also give you a variety of different textures.

4. Reception Design

Consider the various elements that make up your reception tables: chairs, linens, tableware, candlesticks, and candlestick holders. Choose items with colours or textures that complement your aesthetic. Your table configuration will also help you decide what type of floral arrangements will be suitable for your space — romantic lower arrangements lends better to long tables, whereas taller arrangements are a better fit for round tables.

5. Reception Details

Lastly, don’t forget about important elements such as your reception entrance, or the place setting details. The entrance is your guests’ first impression of the evening, so choose an impactful but functional way to display their place cards, or the seating arrangement. Paper goods with handwritten calligraphy is always a romantic way to add a personal touch. And of course, whether you adorn your wedding cake with fresh blooms or sugar flowers, use it as a statement display that is part of your overall wedding reception design.
